06/05/2010 - Pittsburgh, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Aubrey Huff's two-run homer in the sixth proved to be the game-winner as the San Francisco Giants took a 6-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the rain-soaked opener of a three-game set.
Juan Uribe also hit a two-run homer, while Eli Whiteside had a solo shot for the Giants, who have taken six of their last eight games. Jonathan Sanchez (4-4) won his second straight start, as he was charged with four unearned runs on five hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts.
Andrew McCutchen drove in two runs, while Neil Walker added an RBI single for the Pirates, who had won their previous two games coming into the contest. Zach Duke (3-6) was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts over six innings.
The game didn't start for close to three hours after it's original starting time due to heavy rains in the area.
Pittsburgh surged ahead with a four-run second inning. With two on and two out, Buster Posey misplayed a Duke grounder, and Ryan Doumit crossed the plate. McCutchen followed with a double to right-center that scored two more and came home himself on a Walker single for a 4-0 lead.
The Giants got two back in the fifth to cut their deficit in half. Posey led off with a double and moved to third on Huff's single. Aaron Rowand then hit into a double play to score Posey, and Whiteside followed with a solo home run to make it a 4-2 game.
San Francisco then went ahead in the sixth. With two outs and Freddy Sanchez on first, Uribe turned on a pitch and deposited it over the center field wall to tie the game. After Posey singled, Huff made it a 6-4 game with his seventh home run of the season.
The Pirates got men on first and second with one out in the seventh to chase Jonathan Sanchez from the mound, but Santiago Casilla got the next two batters out to escape the jam.
Guillermo Mota retired the Pirates in order in the eighth, and Brian Wilson did the same in the ninth for his 14th save of the season.
Game Notes
Before the game, the Pirates activated pitcher Dana Eveland and optioned pitcher Brian Burres to Triple-A Indianapolis. Eveland was acquired from Toronto in a trade on Tuesday...The Pirates had homered in a season-high four straight games prior to Friday's game...The Giants recalled outfielder Pat Burrell from Triple-A Fresno on Friday and optioned outfielder John Bowker to Fresno...The Giants have won seven of the last eight games against Pittsburgh.
