04/11/2007 - Valencia, Spain (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Defending champion Nicolas Almagro eased into the quarterfinals, while his top-seeded fellow Spaniard David Ferrer pulled out Wednesday at the clay-court Valencia Open.

The third-seeded Almagro won his seventh straight match at this event by handling Italian Alessio Di Mauro 7-5, 6-2 at CT Valencia. Almagro topped Frenchman Gilles Simon in last year's final here.

Almagro's quarterfinal opponent will be another Italian, seventh-seeded Filippo Volandri, who was a 6-4, 1-0 second-round victor over Austrian Stefan Koubek. Koubek retired with a left ankle injury on Day 3.

The world No. 16 Ferrer, the 2005 Valencia runner-up, withdrew from the draw due to a back problem and was replaced by lucky-loser and fellow Spaniard Ivan Navarro Pastor, a 6-3, 6-1 opening-round winner against Italian Daniele Bracciali.

In other first-round play, Italian Potito Starace toppled fourth-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Verdasco titled here in 2004.

Additionally in the opening round, Colombian Alejandro Falla stopped Italian Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-4 and Spaniard Alberto Martin held off his countryman Feliciano Lopez 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Martin will battle his second-seeded and former world No. 1 compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero in the round of 16. Ferrero titled here in 2003, the same year he captured the French Open.
